DIOXINS AND FURANS
Dioxins and dioxin like substances are a family of chemicals that are created by combustion processes as simple as burning wood for a campfire. They are found everywhere in the environment naturally, but they are also formed as a byproduct of industrial processes. Some specific dioxins, such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are only known to be formed by manmade activity.
Dioxins and Furans are considered persistent pollutants. As you may know, 2,3,7,8 TCDD is one of the most toxic substances on the planet! Dioxins/Furans are not easy to remediate and can persist in the environment for a substantial length of time. As a result, Dioxins and Furans are increasingly becoming the focus of environmental site assessment and clean up as well as being included in the evaluation for real estate development and purchases.
Marine sediments and sea food products exposed to Dioxins/Furans streams can contain very high concentrations of PCDD/PCDF and are also seeing a significant increase in required monitoring activities.

PFAAs – Per Fluorinated Alkyl Acids: (Emerging Pollutants):
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (together, PFASs) are a class of man-made chemicals. They are not found naturally in the environment. PFOA and PFOS have been the most extensively produced and studied of these chemicals. Both chemicals are very persistent in the environment and in the human body.
PFASs have been widely used to make products more stain-resistant, waterproof and/or nonstick. For example, PFASs have been used in the manufacture of products that:
- keep food from sticking to cookware,
- make upholstered furniture, carpets and clothing resistant to soil, stains and water,
- make shoes, clothes and mattresses more waterproof,
- keep food packaging from sticking to food, and
- help fight fires at airfields and other places where petroleum-product-based fires are a risk.
Data from animal studies of PFAAs indicate that it can cause several types of tumors and neona-tal death and may have toxic effects on the immune, liver, and endocrine systems.
